As an educator, it is my goal to make all of my students feel safe, welcomed, and wanted in my classroom. To ensure this, I will strive to build a classroom community rooted in respect. I believe that students should play an active role in constructing their knowledge as well as having choice in the classroom. My
classroom will be student centered and rooted in discussion in order to fully engage students. Because each student learns differently and has different needs, I will vary my teaching strategies to meet students where they are. I will hold high expectations for all my students to help them grow and to not settle for less than the best they can accomplish. My classroom will be a place of constant learning; not only for my students, but for myself as well, where we are all striving to improve academically and into better people. I hope my passion for learning and literature will inspire my students to foster this passion and take it with them once they leave my classroom. |
I chose English Education because I strongly
believe in the importance of reading and fostering an appreciation of books in students. Literature gives us the knowledge of man as a subject in a way that no other field does. Reading different works teaches us how to better understand the world around us and better understand each other. We learn what it means to be human by exploring other peoples' lives, both real and fictional. We learn empathy and can explore the world in new ways. Further, reading teaches us both critical and divergent thinking. We bring our own experiences to what we read and allow the words to transform us. English also allows students to form a better understanding of language as a tool. When we have the ability to analyze words, we can learn how they are used for manipulation, communication, expression, and everything in between. Reading is something that students will have to do for the rest of their lives in one way or another. It is important to try and fuel a passion for reading in students. |
